A talk by Prof Jane Mc Cann on the Linen Exhibition – textile production past and present, the future textile use and appeal

Something Old, Something New

Sustainable textile expert and co-curator of Curlew/Kuovi, Jane McCann will be giving a talk on her collaboration with the Finish artist Sirpa Mörsky whose work is featured in the current exhibition at the Sir Hans Sloan Centre.

Their work together has focussed on the adoption and promotion of more sustainable materials within the clothing industry, and novel techniques and practices with lower carbon footprints which can be utilised for customisation and personalisation, emphasising ageless and enduring style rather than fast and transient fashion. The focus of this important and timely research has been primarily on linen, globally recognised for its sustainable qualities, but also includes other natural fibres like wool, hemp and nettle as textile manufacturing and the fashion industry embraces more sustainable practices as we move towards net-zero.
