Linen is alive. Its traditions and production may have modernised, but it is still woven into the fabric of our culture in Northern Ireland.

There are manufacturers and traders that still proudly make and sell Northern Irish linen globally, maintaining its reputation as the finest in the world.

  • Ireland's Oldest Linen Fabric Mill in operation since 1736. William Clark & Sons continues to supply traditional linen fabric or innovative industrial and technical fabric. In 2021 the company was awarded a British Fashion and Textile Technology (BFTT) R&D Grant to pioneer sustainable and innovative developments with their signature Beetling process – one of the oldest linen processes still in operation in Ireland today.

  • Established in 1854, Ferguson’s Irish Linen operates an online linen shop for retail and wholesale. Thomas Ferguson is an Irish linen weaver in Banbridge for over 160 years. Thomas Ferguson is part of the Neilly Group, and is a sister company of John England .

  • Samuel Lamont & Sons Ltd is a family business, manufacturing and supplying a wide range of house-hold textiles for almost 200 years. Founded in 1830, the company became one of Northern Ireland’s foremost linen weavers and gained the Royal Warrant both for retailing and for the supply of bed linen. The factory and warehouse site is located in Lurgan.

  • Manufacturers of Irish Linen since 1912, Baird McNutt began producing and supplying handkerchiefs for the US trade, prospering during the depression of the 1930s.

    In the late 1960s the firm acquired John Hanna of Kells dyeing and finishing works. The company merged with the design services of the McNutt Family in Donegal, now a globally recognised brand Baird McNutt Irish Linen.

    The John England brand dates back 60 years, known worldwide for crafted linens. John England fabrics are woven, and finished, in their factory in Banbridge, Northern Ireland. The company designs, weaves, finishes and supplies worldwide wholesale linen.

  • Magee Weaving is a fifth-generation Irish family business, with over 150 years designing, weaving and tailoring fabrics at their own mill in Donegal, Ireland.

    In the 1860s, John Magee bought and sold handwoven tweed. He established a drapers shop in Donegal town. The shop passed to his cousin, Robert Temple, in 1901. During the 20th century, Magee 1866 established itself as the home of weaving, tailoring and design in Donegal. The company is still run by the Temple family.

  • Bricolage Quilts is a small design studio and linen store based in Belfast, N.Ireland.

    Bricolage represents a piecing together of local Irish linens to create contemporary quilts and homewares.

    Its influences come from a strong design background, the inherent natural qualities of the linen cloth used and the familiar heritage of plant-dyeing processes.
